Join Us
Strange and Farre is happy to welcome people of all backgrounds, ages, and interests. We feel that everyone has something unique to offer the group and the public we seek to educate, and that to recreate historical communities we must work as a community. Everyone shares in research, preparing for events, setting things up and taking them down, and growing the group.
Before joining us ‘in the field,’ we must meet and get to know you in-person at group meetings and/or workshops. After that, if possible given the availability of extra clothing and accessories, you can try us out for a day or weekend at a public-facing event. If you’re a good fit for us and we’re a good fit for you, you can rely on borrowed clothing, when available, for up to one year from your first official event. We will do everything we can to support and assist you in putting together an excellent kit and developing your knowledge and strong skills for working with the public.

Who / What Can I Portray?
There is no denying that we are people of the 21st century, and so long as you are passionate and able to do justice to your chosen portrayal in good faith we are generally open to your ideas if they fit within our scope. We hope to maximize the visual suspension of disbelief as much as possible, so it is expected that things like modern piercings, tattoos, hairstyles, and so on are hidden during public hours. Our focus is the experience of English people in Europe and the early colonies as well as Native people who were here first depending on the event.
We advise that everyone start out with a lower to middle-class kit which can be adapted at either end of our date spectrum, but beyond that whatever fits is typically welcome. If you do wish, however, to portray something like nobility or cavalry, than you must be able to furnish yourself enough to do justice to it. To follow that example, when and where appropriate, other members can be outfitted as servants or members of a retinue to build believability. We have a large assortment of equipment and so are enabled to be flexible depending on the needs of an event site or theme. |
